The English and Welsh Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales will face off in the same group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Group Draws

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks before the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
