Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
