European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
