The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of the former president's move to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. His successor was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
