A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
